Is Exodus 20:4 "second commandment"?

Is Exodus 20:4 "second commandment"? · Excerpts from New Debate on Mariology · Church History, History of Schools too, Not forgetting Latin and Vernaculars

Catholics tend to think First commandment extends verses 2 to 6 in Exodus 20. Note, on DT's enumeration of "real commandment" I bold the actual Bible text, but not how commandments are numbered.

DT
These Catholic people think that their religion is so in tune with God (yeah right). The Bible warns about the curse that is placed on ANYONE that adds to or takes away from the Word of God.

If you will check, the Catholics have removed and done away with the 2nd Commandment, because they are so consumed with idol worship, they don't want that Commandment anywhere around! They removed the 2nd Commandment and made two out of the 10th. Check it out-

This is the Catholic Commandments-

1-I am the LORD your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.
2-You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
3-Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
4-Honor your father and your mother.
5-You shall not kill.
6-You shall not commit adultery.
7-You shall not steal.
8-You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9-You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10-You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

and now read the REAL Commandments and especially the 2nd one-

1.You shall have no other gods before me.

2.You shall not make for yourself a carved image
Or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above
Or that is in the earth beneath
Or that is in the water under the earth
You shall not bow down to them or serve them,
For I the Lord your God am a jealous God
Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me
But showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments

3.You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
For the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain

4.Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy
Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,
But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God
On it you shall not do any work
You, or your son, or your daughter
Your male servant, or your female servant
Or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them
And rested on the seventh day
Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy

5.Honor your father and your mother
That your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

6.You shall not murder

7.You shall not commit adultery

8.You shall not steal

9.You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

10.You shall not covet your neighbor's house
You shall not covet your neighbor's wife,
Or his male servant, or his female servant
Or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's

MB
Most Christians have discarded that as well.

DT
MB ??? I don't know any Christians that have discarded that.

MB
Are you sure about that?

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy

HGL
"If you will check, the Catholics have removed and done away with the 2nd Commandment,"

The text portion you call 2nd commandment is in any Catholic Bible, not just short list of commandments in a catechism.

You see, we think that text portion is part of 1st commandment.

DT
MB yes, I have NEVER known of anyone doing away with or changing them until I found out about the Catholics

MB and your purpose of quoting that Commandment?

HGL
I think MB might consider most Christians are not Sabbatarians.

Including most Protestant ones.

DT
HGL no sir, we observe the Sabbath, we just observe it on Sunday, and the Bible says that it doesn't matter which day, and to not let anyone judge us about the Sabbat

Note
The word "Sabbatarian" refers to denominations that reject Sunday worship - most known today being 7DA. It is not the same thing as keeping the Sabbath if you keep it on Sunday.

HGL
Ah, but the text portion quoted specified the day on which God rested, right?

Are you saying parts of the text are not parts of God's actual commandment?

Esp to us Christian in NT era?

DT
HGL lol, no sir, I certainly don't, but I do say that the Bible, in the New Testament says not to let people judge us for whatever day that we consider the Sabbath. Therfore, I am covered as to what day I observe the Sabbath, but Catholics are NOT covered about their idols and graven images, nowhere in the Bile was that ever changed.

HGL
Colossians 1:15

Before incarnation, there was no visible icon of God, therefore God in one aspect of I commandment temporarily forbade icons of lesser even holy things.

If it had been a commandment in itself, God would not have ordered both Moses and Aaron to make exceptions (brazen serpent and angels on the Ark).

So, with Incarnation, this changes, like Sabbath changes to Sunday bc of Resurrection.

You are aware the Greek for "image" in that verse is the very word "icon", right?

DT
HGL where does the Bible say that idolatry is okay now?

HGL
Adoring an icon:

"And seeing him they adored: but some doubted."
[Matthew 28:17]

According to Colossians 1:15, Christ Himself is an icon.

Idolatry. Nowhere. We don't do idolatry.
